Bernard Felder, Sanctuary Residential
Director and Chief Executive Officer
Bernard Felder has been providing high-quality affordable housing to mixed-income families and seniors since he was a graduate student in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina. Felder’s passion was ignited when, as a Graduate Fellow with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, he helped develop the first low-income housing tax credit development project for seniors in Durham, North Carolina. He continues to focus on affordable multi-family housing because he believes it is the most needed and least addressed aspect of the development industry. Felder obtained his undergraduate degree from University of North Carolina Charlotte.
As the managing and Southeast regional director for Wood Partners’ Specialty House Group from 2001 until 2013, Felder led the development of more than 6,000 multifamily units worth more than $650 million. As senior vice president at Banc of America Community Development Corporation, he developed affordable and mixed-income housing projects throughout the Carolinas and managed the $300 million Banc of America Housing Fund.
Felder began his career working in land management and corporate real estate for Duke Energy Corporation. He is a past vice chair of the Urban Land Institute’s National Affordable Housing Council, a member of the American Seniors Housing Association and has served on the boards of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission and the Mecklenburg County Board of Tax Equalization and Review.
